We started out the spring with a very successful reception in April at the ACS meeting in Anaheim. Ten faculty members met with over 60 alumni and several people from other schools. Chemistry Chairman Kenneth Raymond was the host. Alumni from southern California appreciated our participation and asked us to come to the Cal Day '96 in Los Angeles.
We are planning, along with the Chemical Engineering Department, to host a reception on November 14, at the fall AIChE meeting in Miami. If you're in town, look us up.
This year ACS is sponsoring, along with 20 other countries, "Pacifichem-'95" in Honolulu, Hawaii. The Chemistry Department and our Alumni Association will be hosting an alumni reception on December 18. Please attend if you will be in the area.
Cal Day '95 in Berkeley was a big event! About 30,000 people visited the campus on April 29th. Our College attracted enthusiastic audiences for lectures by several faculty members. Angy Stacy's "Demonstration of the Magic of Chemistry" drew over 400. Our barbecue lunch appealed to more than 60 people, mostly new undergraduates and their parents.
Our first Alumni Directory is due to be mailed in October. I bought my copy and look forward to "surfing" the pages, hoping to find news of old friends from the 1960s.
On December 7, 1995, Chancellor Tien will be the featured speaker at a dinner to be held at the Claremont Hotel. His topic will be "Cal vs. the New Century." Just hearing him speak is worth the $30.00 dinner cost! This will be a joint event, hosted by the Alumni Associations from the Colleges of Engineering, Environmental Design, Natural Resources, and Chemistry. I look forward to seeing you there!
Keep in touch.
