Jean Fréchet appointed first Henry Rapoport Chair in Organic Chemistry

Chemistry professor Jean Fréchet has been appointed the first holder of the Henry Rapoport Chair in Organic Chemistry, effective Jan. 1, 2003 through Dec. 31, 2007.

Internationally recognized in both chemistry and engineering circles for his work relating structure to function of molecules, Fréchet studies organic chemistry on the nanometer scale, using macromolecules to investigate catalysis and chiral recognition to targeted drug delivery. Some of his most recent research focuses on the development of two new families of large molecules for use in drug delivery. Degradable microgels have the potential for enhancing the delivery of vaccines and genetic material, while "dendritic" or highly branched macromolecules hold promise for delivering chemotherapy directly to diseased tissue.
