Undergraduate Dean Marcin Majda congratulates chemistry major Jarrod McClean

June 3, 2009

College of Chemistry honor students were recently presented with awards during the annual Saegebarth Honor Student Teas. Hosted by Undergraduate Dean Marcin Majda, the teas are funded by a gift from Klaus and Mary Ann Saegebarth to acknowledge chemistry and chemical engineering honor students and to give them a chance to relax and socialize before finals begin.

The gathering also provided an opportunity to present the college 2009 Summer Research Awards. The stipends are awarded annually for student research accomplishments and to encourage participation in summer research. The stipends are funded by several donors, including Joseph and Helen Koo, James Y. and Harriet P. Tong, and the late Stanley and Alice Thompson.

Jarrod McClean, a junior chemistry major, was presented with a Dreyfus Foundation Jean Dreyfus Boissevain Undergraduate Scholarship for Excellence in Chemistry. Says Dean Majda, "This is the first time since 2004 that the Dreyfus Foundation selected a Berkeley student for this prestigious award, and they chose well. Jarrod McClean is one of most accomplished undergraduates in the College of Chemistry." McClean will continue his research this summer with professor William Lester.
