UC Berkeley is hosting a science and engineering festival on Sunday, January 23, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

The free event will take place at Sutardja Dai Hall, located on the north side of the UC Berkeley campus, adjacent to Hearst Avenue.

The community-oriented festival highlights science in action. More than 15 campus units will be represented, from astronomy to vertebrate zoology. Participants can put solar power to the test, examine fossils, investigate dry ice and liquid nitrogen and create an earthquake. Also featured are giveaways, take-home science activities and a live performance by the acclaimed Banana Slug String Band.

Berkeley scientists will be on hand to explain the excitement and wonder of the science they do. Hands-on chemistry activities will be conducted by Community in the Classroom, a group composed of College of Chemistry grad students. The group specializes in teaching elementary and middle school students about science through fun, hands-on presentations related to the California science standards.

The Cal Science & Engineering Festival is sponsored by the UC Berkeley Office of the Vice Chancellor for Research and is presented in conjunction with the USA Science & Engineering Festival — the country’s first national science festival (www.usasciencefestival.org/), which took place at the National Mall in Washington, DC, on Oct. 23-24.
